A new owner for Bricklink

A single news item has for the week: Bricklink has been sold by the former owner Daniel Jezek's family to Jung-Ju “Jay” Kim. You can read the full announcement on The Brothers Brick.

If you consider yourself a LEGO builder, you most likely know what Bricklink is. Otherwise, your first question is: what is it, and why should I care?

Bricklink is an unofficial marketplace for anything related to LEGO including sets and bricks. If you look at any creation on the net, chances are that it contains a significant amount of bricks purchased via Bricklink.

Just a two for this week:

April 1st roundup

The "Fascinating Lego Model of the Day" has made an an excellent roundup of this year's April 1st jokes (we were caught by one of them on our Twitter feed).

The NXT STEP blog has announced the arrival of NXT 3.0. It includes axles of length 50, a memory card reader and mirrored motors. It is set for arrival in August.

The Brothers Brick has announced that that they will get rid of one of their editors because he was arrested for drug abuse.

One of the more important news is that the Hello Kitty Duplo line is set for debut in the near future.

Lego Technic Challenge, round one

Round one of the Technic Challenge is now closed, you are free to vote on the flying machines!

From the perspective of the Lego company it is understandable but for others it was a small surprise that the ten finalists are exclusively from kids. According to the official statement the jury was surprised that they received so many submissions from AFOLs (Adult Fan Of Lego). In any case the copany has reacted quickly and announced that there will be separate voting for the best AFOL creations in September. On the Designer Blog they also show the best creations from adults.

The rules are a bit refined based on experience from the first round (see TechnicBRICKS):
  • Submissions with URLs are being moderated out before the judges even see the models
  • Submissions with e-mail and other contact information in the description are being moderated out before the judges even see the models
  • The format the judges will be judging from is still photo; ie. no videos will be taken into consideration, and the judges will not see them
  • Visuals that look like 3D renderings will not be taken into consideration as this is a building competition
Finally a video that was not mentioned on the official pages but is definitely worth attention:

Fresh version of Lego Digital Designer

Virtual builders have probably noticed that a new version of Lego Digital Designer available, which is the free builder application from the Lego company (see our previous post).

Version 3.0 brought these improvements:
  • There is a new user interface. Instead of the grid we are now building on a transparent baseplate and there are other small changes.
  • Round bricks can now built in between four other studs.
  • The hinge tool got a bit more usable and there is the new hinge align tool.
  • Bricks can now be organized into groups and templates.
  • The building guide mode is completely new and more usable.
The main advantage of the program is still the same: you run out of virtual bricks much later than from real ones... Happy building!

Foosball

Another post without Technic... In my defense let me say that foosball is one of my favorite activities. It could not be better than on this table created by Billy McDill where pirates play against knights Lego Castle.

(I do not think it would withstand the style we play with my colleagues but I have to admit it looks nice and well built.)

Warner Bros. to create a Lego movie

The studio and producer Dan Lin have acquired the rights from the Lego company to create a family movie about Lego. It seems that they are planning a movie similar to Toy Story mixing real and animated elements. The target audience is children but of course the plan is to make it enjoyable by adults as well.
